RLS Metro Breaking News - A fire in a two-and-half story home forced residents to evacuate and firefighters to rescue a man from the attic with a ladder.

The fire started in the attic at approximately 2:58 p.m., Elizabeth Fire Chief Tom McNamara said.

The residents on the 1000 block of Jefferson Avenue home evacuated – but as smoke filled the home, the fire department had to remove a man from the attic with a ladder.

The fire was put out by 3:30 p.m., McNamara said. One person – the rescued victim- was taken to St. Barnabas with burns and smoke inhalation injuries, he added.

    No other injuries were reported.

The fire was confined to the attic but there was water damage to the second floor, the chief said.

The fire is still under investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Several hours later, firefighters battled another fire, this time on the 600 block of Jefferson Avenue.

No injuries were reported. Fire was under control in approximately 20 minutes, McNamara said.

A resident in a wheelchair got out of the home unharmed.
