RLSMedia.com - A two-alarm fire in a vacant house on Smith Street this afternoon injured two firefighters and left the two-and-half story duplex home with heavy damage, officials said.

Firefighters responded to the 20’s block of Smith Street for a report of heavy fire and smoke coming from the duplex sometime around 12 p.m.

Official said that the fire is believed to have started on the second floor and quickly extended to the attic.

A search of the house was negative for occupants, but according to witnesses, squatters were believed to be in the home shortly before the fire.

Two firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Despite frozen hydrants and freezing temperatures, firefighters placed the fire under control in just under a half an hour.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
